Bole, Ghana – A flagship socio-cultural programme in Gonja on Nkilgi FM at Bole called ‘Dankare’ (Tradition) has been cancelled by management of the station following a demand by the Bole Traditional Council.
The Caretaker Chiefs of the Traditional Council led by the Mankumawura and accompanied by the Seripewura, Nsuawura, Tunawura and Kalbawura stormed the office of Nkilgi FM on Monday May, 21, 2018 to make the demand on management of the radio station.
The Chiefs gave several reasons for their decision but all points to “over exposure of Gonja traditions” some of which are supposed to be secret.
Without hesitation and without any questions, the General Manager of Nkilgi FM Mahama Haruna told the Chiefs that the programme has been cancelled and would no longer be aired.
The programme “Dankare” is one of the most listened to programmes and is aired every Sunday from 8:00am to 10:00am.
According to Mr. Mahama, Nkilgi FM designed the “Dankare” programme because “the radio station believe the traditions of Gonja represent a critical piece of their culture and without culture, traditions and customs, we are not complete.
“Tradition reinforces our values and it is through tradition we learn who we are and so Nkilgi FM used the programme to bring traditional stories, beliefs, rituals and customs that have been passed from one generation to the next”, he explained.
But the concern expressed is that, it is not only Nkilgi FM that runs a tradition based programme on Radio in Bole.
Will the Bole Traditional Council cancel all tradition based programmes on Radio stations in Bole or the target is Nkilgi FM?
